The Writers Studio

Breaking Free is a multi-disciplinary workshop for Black writers who want to explore podcasting, filmmaking, theatre, multi-media storytelling, or other industries incorporating writing and the five senses.

Writers will have the opportunity create presentable work – through the guidance of an instructor –  for their portfolios. This work will be posted or uploaded on the Breaking Free website.

The Workshop will allow Black writers to explore and solidify themselves in their respective fields, whether that be songwriting, podcasting, filmmaking or multi-media creation , etc.

Meet the Instructor

Hello, I’m Catherine!

I have a bachelors in creative writing from Kwantlen Polytechnic University and a certification in Journalism from Langara College. I’m also an editor at Augur Mag and PULP Mag and an editorial assistant at Prism International. I have short stories published in Quarantine Reviews, Random Photo Journal, Otis Nebula, and PULP Mag—likewise, bylines at Stir Vancouver, SAD Mag, and This Magazine. I have also directed two short films; one called (W.I.P) and another called HOMEPAGE. HOMEPAGE was screened at WOCF 2021 Summer Film Challenge. (W.I.P) was screened at the WOCF 2022 Anniversary Gala.

I am a multi-disciplinary creative who desires to create opportunities and avenues for Black Canadian writers to expand their artistic capabilities. Having made several short films and written/composed a song for the 2022 ArtSong Lab, I believe writers should explore different types of art that incorporate writing to expand their portfolios, so they can better identify their career paths.
